A Day with Dirty Martini, Burlesque Superstar

Since I was a teenager and first discovered burlesque (on the internet, natch) as what was, in my mind, an obscure part of the art world, it has been a huge point of intrigue for me. I love the costumes, the play on gender in using drag (and, by the way, drag doesn't have to mean cross-dressing, but rather any/all performance of gender), and the amazing diversity and celebration of body throughout the burlesque world. The burlesque community is full of genuine characters, and among my favorites is none other than Dirty Martini. I've probably seen her perform at least a dozen times, and every single time I'm discovering something new, a nuance to her performance that makes it distinct and unique from the previous one. There's a reason she's among the most celebrated performers in the burlesque world. Of course, when I got the opportunity to spend a day with her and do an interview for Vogue Curvy, I knew I was in for a treat.

  8. Pinkbow: Thank you so much Paula!!! What's the name of the book? I'd love to check it out.

Thicker Than Your Average Girl: I think she has a blast!

Vanessa: Agreed, not to mention the greatest drink ;)

Sarah: Thank you thank you!!! There was soooo much more amazing stuff in the interview that didn't make the final cut - but I'd love to get a hold of the footage of her talking about burlesque in terms of gender performance, and the history of the artform, and womens empowerment! ahhh

Jennifer: Thank you! I try. It's mostly the camera.

Ylenia: Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. You should check into the local burlesque scenes in Italy; here in the US, it's very common to see LOTS of different body types on the stage :)

Thefatandskinnyonfashion: Yes, her hair changes quite a bit, but I LOVE the red!
