I know I swore I'd never, ever wear a maxi, but with every rule comes an exception, and several months after I proclaimed my disdain for the long, flowy garment - three have snuck into my usually highly discriminating wardrobe. I first spotted this Cynthia Rowley number this past February, when my best friend Marc and his girlfriend Margot came into town and we popped into the Bleecker Street boutique. It was lust at first sight, but I still wondered if there was a way I could incorporate an ankle-skimming number into my style. I felt like this one was different: One, it didn't come with the requisite "boob tube" I've come to associate with most maxi dresses, (something that, as a bustier girl, I truly resent in any piece of clothing), and two, the silk color blocking and cut-outs were unique enough to stand out in a sea of summertime maxi skirts and dresses. Still, my attraction sat on the back burner, until this past week when I opened a care package from my always-thoughtful mom and found the skirt inside!

I HAVE SO MANY THINGS TO SAY ABOUT THIS
ReplyDelete1. omg that skirt is amazing, also love the black/navy, i am kind of obsessed with this
2. how are you doing this topknot thing and looking so good, every time i try to do that i look like i have a weird tumor/koosh-ball/pom-pom on top of my head, it is probably my bangs and the fact that i have 29381 layers in my hair that make any 'bun'/'topknot' into a weird hairy fuzzball, isn't it
3. i have been meaning to try out occ lip tar for a while but probably in some wonky colours or maybe just for a really saturated deep red or orange
4. diorshow mascara is SO CRUCIAL
5. nails, explain right now
My god, you look INCREDIBLE in this skirt!! LOVE the contrast hem length/colour, and how you've teamed it with the top knot (which is too adorable on you for words - and one of my favourite hairstyles full stop). And I have the same maxi-length fear (as well as of pleated knee-length chiffon skirts) which I always think look ridiculous with my curves, but I'm trying to find the perfect piece to overcome this.
ReplyDeleteAlso this is completely petty - buy does your MAC 187 brush come with the pink ends, or is it just like that from blush (I've only ever seen white ends). And must remember to stock up on Stila in NY - it's been discontinued here for a couple of years sadly.
Briony xx
I love your lipstick and the shape of your eyebrows!! you are very cute, indeed!!

This is WONDERFUL. Your makeup is impeccable! This outfit is a badass version of the (always similar) maxi outfits.
ReplyDeleteI also had some disdain towards maxis' but I'm warming up to them. Looking beautiful.

So good, just... SOOOO GOOOODDD!
ReplyDeleteI too am warming up to the maxi's. I find myself falling victim to some of the nude stuff that at first, I swore I would never do (again). And right this moment, I'm really disliking the whole concept of denim on denim or denim with leather during a summer where I'm supposed to finally be free of the cold wet weather that demands denim.
ReplyDeleteLove the lip! Love your style!
ReplyDeleteI really, really want to try the OCC lip tar!
ReplyDeleteSo totally gorgeous - you look so fresh and pretty! I was anti-flats, anti-maxis, anti-midi, ANTI-LEGGINGS and eventually succumbed to them all. Of course.
ReplyDeleteomg! I love this dress! beautiful make uptoo!
ReplyDeleteohh thats a cool maxi, very different to the other ones that are out. I love your NastyGal knuckle ring, have to put it on my wishlist! hmm I think I decide if I like something or not as soon as I see it and then theres no going back haha

ReplyDeletestart vlogs please!!! how amazing to catch this outfit in motion! xoxoxo elle
ReplyDeleteI'm loving everything about your outfit! (ESPECIALLY your hair and makeup). I love that even you will challenge your own style, and this is why I find you so inspiring!

You look gorgeous! I love a good pink lipstick
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more!! A great pink lip is essential.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI can see this style being perfect on you, especially with your long hair!
ReplyDeleteI feel like challenge is so crucial to the growth and evolution of my personal style! Otherwise I'd still be wearing black shift dresses all-day-every-day.
ReplyDeleteHaha I don't know about vlogs!! But maybe some sort of videos can be worked in :)
ReplyDelete<333 the skirt is so different than what I normally wear, but at the same time, not? I'm in love with it.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!!
ReplyDeleteOhh, what's your name on instagram??
ReplyDeleteThat's how I used to be, too!! But lately I find myself easening up on my sartorial convictions.
ReplyDeleteThank you, darling!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!!
ReplyDeleteThe great thing about living in New York is that black sundresses are not just acceptable, they're celebrated!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could say I was an early adopter on all trends, alas...! Thanks for tolerating my months of berating maxi dresses only to arrive here :)
ReplyDeleteThey are honestly fantastic and an incredible value! You barely need to use any to get an opaque lip.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI literally cannot conceive how ANYONE tolerates leather in this weather. Trust me, I love my leather, but if I'm already dripping sweat, the last thing I want is a second skin!

ReplyDeleteThank you, Gisela <3
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Amy!

ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Love your username!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Alissa!! Cynthia Rowley is definitely worth trying. I do find most of their clothing runs on the narrow side, but I have about 4 or 5 pieces from there that I love!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the skirt!!!!
ReplyDeletei know you are but what am i?
ReplyDeleteThank you gazel!!! I can definitely see you rocking a skirt like this. I think the dresses are what make the "maxi" trend so polarizing. Especially with the (ugh) boob tubes!!! xo.
ReplyDeletei can't take much credit for the brows, i definitely got them from my mama!
ReplyDeletethanks ylenia!!!
i looooove you nora!!!!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I just don't think long lengths look good on me! I think they highlight how disproportionate I am, so without having some kind of contouring/cutout/etc, I feel like I end up looking like a barrel! So, this was the perfect solution for me - it's the right "look" for the sake of fashion, but something that still feels true to my style and personality.
ReplyDeleteThank you sooo much for all the support and sweet comments. I adore you, Kim!
Thank you so much, Cecilia!
ReplyDeleteEEeeee <3 Thank you Briony. As I'm writing this I'm just thinking 2 MONTHS 2 MONTHS 2 MONTHS. I agree with you - I've had an overwhelming sense of paranoia about this silhouette because of how it will make my shape look, but I think the cut-out and asymmetrical hem is the perfect solution for my phobia.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'm totally embarrassed by the appearance of my 187 brush, but I promise I wash (and shampoo!) my brushes frequently! It's just stained from years of blush/rouge/cheek stain, and short of bleaching it, I don't think it's ever going to go back to white. The one I use for powder is, similarly, stained a light taupe. So sad you can't get Stila in the UK!!! That said, we can't get Barry M, which while significantly less posh, I still wish would come stateside!
ADDRESSING THESE ONE BY ONE.
ReplyDelete1. it is kind of my new fav, can it please be the only maxi skirt to ever exist?
2.
so i hinted at this, but the secret is a.) SOCK, b.) TEASING. so this is what i did. a step by step, if you will. I took a sock. I cut the toe off the sock. I rolled it into a little donut shape. I put my hair in a REALLY HIGH AND TIGHT pony tail. I took the tail end of my pony and TEASED THE FUCK OUTTA IT. Teasing is super crucial for volume and anti koosh-balling. Once your hair is TEASE LIKE FUCK, slip the sock-donut over your ponytail so it sits at the base. You might need to TEASE LIKE CRAYCRAY a little more. The next and final step is to tuck.that.shit. Just take the end of your pony tail and tuck them under the donut. I used bobby pins to secure it, then sprayed my head with approximately 1 whole bottle of hairspray.
3. i have them in an unreasonable amount of colors - from reds and oranges to yellow (like why do i need this, ever) to green to lilac to... i might have a problem. they have them at wonderland salon in meatpacking if you want to try them out. the light blue is kind of incredible. the black is the best black ever.
4. i mean... yeah it is. i alternate between this and bad gal lash. but i'm also like, not very picky with mascara as long as it doesn't run into my eyes and make me cry.
5. procedure is pretty simple. the dealy is this: base coat. any color. a lighter color works best. take a q-tip; cut off cotton-swab end of the q-tip. pour some polish onto a slick surface (i used foil). dip the q tippy stick into the polish and make little dots. space sporadically. then, with a nail art pen (i'm fond of the sally hansen nail art pens for like $8 bucks from DR) i make little squiggly parenthesis around each dot. voila! leopard nailz.
You pull off the maxi so well & your nails look stunning!
ReplyDeleteEvery single day when I remember I'm coming, I have to supress the urge to squeel with excitement!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou're right - the skirt is the perfect paranoi-buster and looks absolutely fantastic on you (and love how you've styled it).
And no, I like the pink ends! Feel free to send me a Barry M shopping list (along with anything else you want). There is something so fun about not being able to get something up home, but then stocking up on it on trips or it arriving in care packages from afar. Makes even the simplest things (like Stila makeup or awesome American gum) feel like a novelty.
B xx
this is all so major, my mind is blown.
ReplyDeleteloving hot pink lip with a rosy cheek! actually i'm craving it recently, looks so fresh with dark hair...
