Hebrew School Drop Out

The title is actually a total lie. I graduated from Hebrew school with flying colors, Mazel Tov to myself. That said, I have been suffering from residual guilt every time I look at this shirt hanging in my closet. I can't help it, approximately eighteen-years of Jewish studies have made crosses, (as secular of an image as they are today), a total shonde in my mind. Obviously, though, not enough of a shonde for me to abstain from wearing them. My apologies to Rabbi(s) Herscher and Zeldin, if they happen to be the type to read fashion blogs; you never know. And, with the major summertime fatigue I'm currently experiencing, sheer black fabric was the perfect way for me to evoke my autumnal longing with a single garment. I feel like I compromised with my (slightly) religious upbringing by at least wearing an opaque slip under the top! Points for modesty, right?

  1. what a look! i am so in love and i have to try this myself! unbelievable! what a mix and what an effect! yep, you did evoked the fall feeling because of the black, but the bare legs and the sheer refers to summer! I love the combination of the prints, i would never come up with it! the skirt is like made for you! the little crosses are a funny accent! black skirts can sometimes be too harsh, but the white softens it!

    A lot of people religious scold me when I'm wearing crosses because I'm an atheist. Puh-lease, I can wear whatever the hell I want. Crosses, schmosses. Hahha. <3

  11. I never go near cross stuff because of the from a jewish family thing, and I always look at the beautiful rosaries in street style photos and wish I would feel comfortable wearing them...

    Horowitz, this outfit is the PERFECT example! I was eyeing that necklace
    at JCrew and couldn't choose between that and another with jade stones
    on it, ended up with the jade but I might have to go back for the
    crystal!.

  20. Love the skirt, wish they made it in the Curve collection as well. Oh well, more motivation to get closer to the 14! I always feel a little bit uneasy about wearing crosses too (as an atheist) but I still love them.

As much guilt as this top evokes, you look SO good in it (and it perfectly embodies the Cher Horowitz meets Wednesday Adams vibe) - and don't even get me started on that skirt (which is basically a sartorial fantasy for me - traditional English houndstooth AND sequins?! Yes please) which with your killer legs is too perfect for words. Basically I want to steal this entire outfit.

  50. I'd say if you're close to a 14, it's worth trying. The base of the skirt is knit so there's a bit of stretch to it! Plus, free shipping and returns, so no harm if it doesn't work out...

  58. I know I already mentioned this on twitter, but worn low on my hips it nearly hits my knees. The model is definitely super tall and leggy, and I also have pretty short legs, but I don't feel the skirt is SUPER mini at all.
