Big Hair, Florals, and Chris Benz

"Everybody was going crazy this summer with the heat wave. We were all in the studio, and I just decided to go with it. It's Andy Warhol's superstars go to Coney Island, with a nod to candy kids."
I love, and have loved, Chris Benz since the first collection I saw of his in 2007, while I was in my Junior year at Parsons, (I specifically remember this because I waxed poetic about his debut collection on LiveJournal). He has such a fun sensibility and a talent with color that truly harkens back to the pop artists of the 1960's -- such that it's no surprise his Spring 2012 collection was inspired by the king of pop (art), Warhol himself; even Benz's rotation of candy-colored coifs echoes his attraction to punchy palettes. Without further ado, I'll let my photos of his collection speak for itself - one filled with modest silhouettes in flamboyant patterns. My favorites? Photographic prints of floral collages, voluminous clouds of hair painted with a bit of grey (seriously, this is my new OBSESSION), and crazy pattern mixing that is inspiring me to be a little more adventurous with my own pattern play.

  4. That is some serious eye candy! I love it. Sometimes, extreme hair or make up can really distract from the collection its self but with this one - it totally works. Thanks for doing such an amazing job at capturing it so well and sharing it with all of us that couldn't see it for ourselves!

  8. I really like this collection because it feels so "now" and doesn't really reference ant time period. And what great photos! If I was CB I would be thrilled with these images! Perfect!

  9. Beautiful colors. LOVE your photos. Particularly the first one. I m not crazy for mixing patterns together myself yet. I ll take the frst floral jacket for sure. It feels like being in flower fields in Carslbad in spring. big volume hair I like too. You seem to have a great camera and even a better photographic eye for taking these amazing shots. We are not missing much of the fashion week as with these pictures one feels we are there in person. Great coverage my Nikki.

  10. Geez Louise!  These are gorgeous!  I'm old enough to remember the 80's fashion.  The rose jacket even has a little rose button. Simply beautiful!  I would give my pinky for those pink sunglasses!  And finally my hairstyle is in style! Thank you!

  18. I don't normally wear much color, but I would literally wear EVERYTHING from Chris Benz' collection. The floral blazer is my number one crush, right now!

  19. The trick with the hair, I think, is to tease, then tease some more, and keep teasing.....

  20. HAHA! I think so. I quite like the look of grays, actually. I think it can look very distinguished. I think as a culture we fear aging too much. It's a part of life we should all embrace :)

  22. I think the layering is a nice nod to the 80s, certainly. But the colors and patterns are exceptional!

  27. I definitely think there are references, but the styling and layering are very true to the times now.
