In a New York Minute

With my lovely friend Briony in town, I've had a bit of an opportunity to play the part of a tourist in my own town: lunching at Fred's at Barneys (amongst more than a handful of real ladies who lunch, gallivanting along the edge of Central Park, fawning over the private courtyard and garden at The Frick, lusting over all of the beautiful things in the windows of Bergdorf Goodman and Agent Provocateur and Céline and Valentino, and picking up too-many-macarons which we later shared over tea at home... I really, really treasure living in this city. Really.

What things do you do in your hometown when people come to visit? Are there famed attractions you've never even bothered with? Confession: I've never been to the Empire State Building, or the Chrysler, or taken the Staten Island Ferry to catch a view of the southern tip of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty...

  2. god those glasses are SO good. impeccable.

in quebec city, i feel i'm  in the same boat with generally avoiding the famed attractions. no, quebec city is not nearly as storied as nyc, but it is the oldest city in north america. most of the iconic things (historic battle sites, the chateau frontenac, etc) i saw when i was a teen on a field trip but i tend to avoid the old city.

i feel like you get to know a city best if you just go about the person you're visiting's day to day habits. i went to nyc once two summers ago and didn't see any huge landmarks, but went to an amazing slam poetry night, saw beautiful graffiti and street art, watched the sunset on a rooftop, saw a free concert in williamsburg, made super cheap pasta. had an amazing time, didn't break the bank, and was meeting people who lived in nyc, not a huge crowd of tourists. i much prefer that.

  5. You have to do the staten island ferry! They serve beer! It's a cute cheap date if you go at sunset.

  7. It took me 13 years living in Canterbury to go to Canterbury Cathedral. I doubt I would have still gone then, if my parents had not sent me to a Cathedral school in the cathedral grounds!

  8. I only did one of those things (Empire State Building) when I lived there, and the only reason I did that was because I had girlfriends in town who wanted to go! Love the first pic and your Miu Miu's! At least I think they are Miu Miu's ?

  10. I live in NY as well and I keep telling myself I should play tourist more often.  However, there is a Peruvian restaurant in New Rochelle that I take everyone to when they come in town.  The food is ALWAYS good and my guests can't wait to come back.  If you're ever in the area, look up Cholos...its yummy!

  13. I love when you do NYC-themed posts. I feel the same way about the city, even though I just moved to NYC three months ago. There is just something so incredible special about the place... My visitors usually come from Sweden, so the always want to shop, but I make sure that the always see the High Line, and that they get a chance to see parts that aren't in Manhattan, as well. My friend just left and we took her to see friends in the Bronx and out for dinner several times in our neighborhood, Astoria.

I've never been to any tourist attractions in my hometown except the amusement park (but I've been going there since I was 8). I want to move to NYC so bad. It's such a beautiful place and it seems like everything in the world is there.

  15. I NEED TO VISIT YOU IN QUEBEC. PLEASE. CAN I? LET'S MAKE THIS HAPPEN. It's been years since I've been there (yes, stayed at Chateau Frontenac and bought maple candies because I'm cheesy like that).
Also come to NYC asap. Loooove you.

  16. It's so easy to fall in love with New York City - no longer how long you're here! What do you do in the Bronx? I haven't spent much time there! And what are your favorite Astoria restaurants??

  18. Like Ginsberg says, I think everyone should live in NYC once - but leave before they get too hard.
