All Pink Everything

Anyone who knows me in real life (or follows me on twitter, which, these days, is practically the same thing), knows that I'm going through a major pink moment. I hinted at it in this post, but the extent to which I'm pink-washing my life is reaching Barbie-like proportions. Like many girls my age, I went through a serious tom-boy phase, where skirts and dresses and anything pink or purple or pastel were as undesirable as a trip to the dentist. Something happened around my entry to adolescence where I ditched the pants, tossed the Adidas Superstars, and begged for a pair of platforms and bright pink lipstick. I definitely come from a feminist mindset, so as I grew older and more conscious of the way our gender identity is socialized, I began questioning my own unabashed femininity. I've now come to a place of very intentional femininity, and relish in all the stereotypically girly things. Put a bow, a heart, a ruffle on just about anything, and you've won me over.
That said, I know that pink can have an incredibly polarizing effect. My sister, for example, absolutely hates it - and we grew up in the same household, so it's not exactly an issue of nurture!

How do you feel about pink? Do you love it? Hate it? Do you find yourself going in and out with specific colors over time?

  2. Yep sometimes it is not done to wear pink because it is too
girly, pink can have a bad perception. But I think it is all about who wears it
how! Like gala darling, she definitely knows how to wear pink! I know that you
are the perfect lady to wear pink, it looks very sophisticated with the right doses
of retro glamour! Like you stepped out of a gorgeous black and white and pink
    movie!

  4. nicolette i love this post! i think we share pretty similar opinions on this one. for the longest time i rejected a lot of things traditionally associated with femininity - dresses, skirts, pink, makeup, jewelry, heels.... i look back on those photos of me in torn up old men's pants and little kid's t-shirts and it's not that i don't like how i looked then, it's just interesting to think why i rejected those things. i think there's a lot to be said about how pervasive misogyny can be, and how many young girls who start thinking critically about the sexist things they see around them initially react to it. my way was to reject things i associated with traditional femininity, sartorially and socially. i didn't want to cook, i didn't want to watch chick flicks, i didn't want to just hang out with other girls, i wanted to FUCK SHIT UP. but at the time, that mostly meant trying to be like a boy, in both appearance and actions... which was never representative of me.

it was only much later, and now, as a more well-rounded adult that i started to understand that you can LOOK feminine and still fuck with hyper gendered ideas of what a woman should look and act like! for my champagne birthday, turning 26 on the 26th, i wore a bright pink sequined dress for goodness sake! i wouldn't have been caught dead in that even 5 years ago.

aside from the fact that all of these things and photographs are SO PRETTY and are inducing massive amounts of jealousy, i think the political reclaiming side of it is so much fun to explore as well.

  5. I'm SWOONING, these things are so beautiful. I'm excessively girly a lot of the time, too...

  6. Oh, I'm also having a huge pink moment right now, but a pale pink moment. I can only stand hot pink in small details. It's funny how in high school and through the first years of college I was a sucker for anything pink and one day I just started hating it with all my strength. I seriously didn't touch pink for 4 years or so. I'm glad my love for pink is back! I kinda felt bad hating pink, cause I'm a lover not a hater!:)

  7. I love pink, girly things - especially if they sparkle! I went through a phase in middle school where I loved things that were black and pink and it couldn't be just pink. Weird. These are beautiful items! I looooove those pink heels and the skull candle!

  9. Amazing. I absolutely LOVE all of the pink! It's so much fun. How are those jeans? I've been curious about ASOS curve jeans.

  10. I love pink, but it has to be a very specific shade--either a very soft peachy ballerina pink, or a crushed raspberry color. Also, I second Kirstin's question: how are ASOS curve jeans. I've been eying their pastel skinnies, but have no idea what the fit would be like.

  11. ooo I do love these hazy, dreamy photos! I have a bit of a similar story with pink  - I never wore it once my entire childhood (it was for the "prissy girls", or so I thought. I wasn't even a tomboy!). When I moved out to LA I stepped away from my nearly-all-black wardrobe and starting accepting bright colors to match the scenery. The first pink thing I bought was a pale peach purse - it was the exact color I imagine a spleen would be. And if it's not spleen-colored, you're not doing it right.

From there, things have spiraled out of control. For example, I am bona fide obsessed with these satin pink pants that @Jazzimcg posted on her blog the other day (http://www.jazzimcg.com/blog/style/pepto-pink-on-pink/). If you had told me I'd be foaming at the mouth to buy those 5, even 3 years ago, I'd laugh for days.

  14. I feel I am having this right now.  I want high heels instead of sneakers and skirts are actually appealing and I would have laughed at the idea 3 years ago.  Now I am just trying to keep my style but just make it more...I don't know adult, thoughtful, professional.  Now I just need to figure out how

  15. How do I love red & white's offspring? Let me count the ways! For years I've regarded pink as my power color -- something about that color makes me feel the most like me. Does that make sense? I even splurged on the most perfectly pink professional padfolio to carry with me on job interviews. Looking around my room now, I can spot at least 7 pink items, I love the color that much. And while I've had dalliances with other colors (purple, red, & green), I always come back to pink. Always.

  16. What a beauty pink has so many nuances that I can actually decide which of them I like the most but probably this the light pink.

  17. I'm edging into pink territory myself and I used to make no secret of disliking it! Now I find myself with two (!) pairs of pink heels, a dress, and lots of lipsticks and polishes.

Though, I'm trying to keep myself from AP. Bad things happen to my wallet in there...

I've never been a pink kind of gal but I too decided to give it a chance. I bought a pink blazer & I'm in love with it. Can't wear it! Great post!

  20. I am SO of the same mindset that this post is practically crack to me. You'll never believe this, but I went through the same tomboy phase (I actually wore skater shoes. Me!), but now I am unashamedly powerless to the lure of a bow, heart, twinkly baubles and anything blush or lolly pink. This season I MUST find some candy pink jeans (that are actually flattering), dress like a bag of sugared almonds, and add more bow heels to my collection.

Hurray for deliberately embracing all things feminine!

  21. Major lover of pink here - I even bought those same ASOS jeans! (And promptly discovered that my black undies were..uh..noticeable through them). I don't wear a lot of pink usually, but it's a major theme in accessory and home furnishing purchases!

  23. I love these photos, especially the last one with multiple Miu Miu goodies! I feel ya on the tom boy phase! I def went through the same thing in middle school. I refused to wear skirts or dresses and I think my favorite color was "olive drab". In high school I realized I could be more girly without compromising my values. I still don't wear a ton of pink, but I do surround myself with it! It's weird, I just did a post with blush toned themes in it too. Hooray for pink!

  24. The last photo makes me want to wear all pink tomorrow! I definitely had a tom boy phase (complete with a bowl cut!) and then moved into ultra girly style. Thanks for the outfit inspiration for tomorrow!

  26. Came here from
À l'allure garçonnière. :) I definitely went through a phase, as a teenager, where I rejected most things associated with 'girliness' like pink and dresses (I still wore some but was mainly in pants) but I definitely embrace it all, now. I don't wear a lot of pink, still, but my bedroom is painted pink and I just love it. It's a slightly deeper pink than the colour my bedroom was as a child, though. And I do find myself going through colour phases - wore a LOT of navy blue and red last year, mainly in winter, and wanted to wear a lot of mint green this summer.

  29. I am always cycling back and forth through colors. I like pink, just not on me. My favorites tend to be ones that look the best on me. Red has got to be my #1 all time go to color. It looks the best on me. I may like other colors but they'll never feature heavily in my wardrobe or home decor if they don't look very good on me/near me.
