Fast forward: that girl was me, (obviously). When I finally rushed home and walked into my apartment, I found that it looked not unlike an NYC street after a short, but serious, downpour. My precious Chanel bag was soaked, the paint from my walls and ceiling were peeling back and ripping away from the walls, and raindrops literally streamed down through my roof. Thank god for a good insurance policy, (shout out to Mike at Travelers for making this otherwise headache-of-an-experience a relief). This past week I packed up the entirety (and trust me, I have a lot of things) of my apartment (an unfortunate necessity in trying to repair my floors) and moved myself across the East River and into a nice little hotel on the edge of Manhattan: The Standard.
A peak into my Standardized life, thus far... Yes, it's my own Eloise-meets-Kevin McCallister alternate reality all rolled into one.

Flowers from a bodega ($10 for 2 dozen) for my room and a gluten free crepe from Bar Suzette, located inside the neighborhood Chelsea Market.
A couple things about The Standard: it's located in the most amazing below-14th (thank god) location, situated (literally) on top of The Highline, there are amazing views, and the service has been impeccable from the moment I arrived. For a small fee, I was even allowed to bring my cat with me, (though admittedly, this got a few stares upon check-in... But would you leave your cat in a kennel for 2+ weeks?)
I won't lie, now that the headache of hastily packing my life into boxes is a few days into the past, I'm quite enjoying the staycation. And the moral of the story? Get home insurance!! I can't imagine where I'd be in this process without it.
Oh girl, that is not such good news! but i don't think that the standard is such a bad alternative! hope everything will turn out okay! when will you be alble to move back? PS love these smashing little photos! and those Prada's remind me of Mugler years and years ago!
ReplyDeleteWhat a horrible thing to happen to your apartment! At least you are able to get it fixed and in the meantime live in a fun place! I would definitely bring my fury friends with me too and not kennel them! Loving all your pics!

I am glad you are making the most of an unfortunate incident. It seems you got rid of some unwanted items in the process and will be starting fresh in the Spring/ New Year with a new and even better begining. Enjoy but don't get used to the standard and the gorgeous view.

ReplyDeleteYou are so right about renter's insurance. A few years ago while I was at work, my apartment caught fire and I lost everything except what I wore to work that day. Even my cat perished in that fire. The insurance couldn't replace my cat but all of my lost belongings were replace and I was moved into a nice apartment by my insurance company while I looked for a new place to live. I can' t stess it enough to people. Get renter's insurance! You never know when you may need it.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you were able to salvage a lot of your things and that you are being taken care of while waiting for repairs to be completed on you apartment.
This same thing happened to me and my roommates a couple years ago except we didn't have renters insurance and the landlord was a complete troll. It didn't end well I'll just say that, but glad to see that it went way much better for you!

ReplyDeletein happier news - i love the standard! my sister works for helmut lang and they jusstttt moved into their new offices right next to the standard. she sees naked people in the windows alllll day long :) and goes to the chelsea market at lunchtime! maybe you'll see her!

ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear about your apartment, but thank goodness you're insured! I've wanted to stay at The Standard for a while now, especially for the location. Too bad you couldn't have planned the flood for the spring when everything is blooming on the High Line. It sounds like you are taking a positive outlook despite all the trouble and stress I'm sure this has caused. Go you! Hope your beautiful apartment is ship-shape soon enough.
ReplyDeleteMy room currently floods when we get bad rain & Sydney has been getting some crazy rain. Luckily it just seems to be the floor (which is tiles), so after the first flood, i've not lost anything. The hotel gets mega points from me for letting the cat stay & i'm in love with the bug necklaces!

Glad to hear you're turning a crappy situation into a good thing, and hope it's going well for you! I have renters insurance too, I tell everyone to get it too, cause you just never know! My parents house flooded similarly a few years ago (but had home insurance) and all the carpet and part of the drywall had to get gutted, it is such a grueling process and IMAGINE if you had to pay for it yourself!

Sorry to hear about your apartment! Will you be able to move back in or will you have to look for a new place? I'm very fortunate that I am married to Spock and he makes sure we have all types of insurance. Apparently, that's the logical thing to do...meh
