Hello Style: Teen Dreams

I really wish blogging existed as it does today when I was a teenager, but I did find solace in amazing online communities on LiveJournal, where I connected with other youngin's on how to DIY, share inspiration, and generally commiserated with other angsty babes who made me feel a little less alone in the world. Growing up "othered" (in any capacity, but I've always been "othered" to at least 4 degrees), is hard - but compound that with the anxiety of high school in general, and damn. (Yes, as per Dan Savage, it does get better - but I think the goal should be to make the "now" better.)
Anyways, responding to some of my reader & YouTube comments, I made this video with HelloStyle to give a little bit of guidance to myself-of-ten-years-ago.

My teen years were a definite time of experimentation, but the one thing I absolutely loved? Betsey Johnson. I would save up my allowance and hit the sale rack and find the one great Jersey knit dress or skirt with an elasticated hem; it was my main go-to when I wanted to feel like I was participating in fashion. I've become a much more savvy shopper since then, and my options have opened up tremendously, but Betsey Johnson played such an important role in the evolution of my style. I was pretty heartbroken when I heard she was closing shop.

  5. I wish online clothing shopping existed when I was a teenager (I guess it sort of did - but not the extent it does today). I always had a hard time at the mall because clothes just didn't fit me right (especially in the Jrs section). I'm so glad that girls today have an outlet and role models like you to get great advice from. Seriously, great.

  6. I would hate to be a teenager again...too much angst, and I think it is worse now for girls..beauty and fashion is expected, whereas when I was in school scruffy Levis and boob tubes were in style. Now girls need the hair, makeup, clothes and body. I am frequently in situations where people comment about someone being fat...I think it is one of the last taboo subjects. I recently wrote about that on my blog and had a good response. I'm thicker skinned now so I can tolerate more, but we do need to get our young girls confident with what they have. AND the boys need to show that curvy girls can be very attractive...it goes both ways.

    Love the blog Nicolette.

  8. It's really cool that you were already saving up for statement pieces in high school. I was still in the disposable trend phase, although I got a lot of those trends via thrift. Great video--I love your makeup.

  9. woah, i feel the exact same way as you do. growing up in HS i didn't relate to my friends and turned to people online. i wonder if i can even find my livejournal anymore. betsey was my favorite designer and was the first real "fashion" piece i ever bought. when i met her last year at an event i was working i could have died and went to heaven. she was so nice and fun and gave all of her fans huge hugs (the pic of me and her has been my FB profile pic ever since). so sad that she had to close down.......le sigh.

  11. So So fun and applicable! It hurts me when I see style guide vlogs that are so generic or don't address real concerns, they just sort of skim the top and are all froth, no substance. I knew watching this you would name names, give urls, and outline totally doable shopping strategies, and I love it! Thank you for bringing relevance to these kind of video how-tos! p.s. love your lip color! I need it!

  15. It's really wonderful that you're sharing information with people who need it, I'm green with envy that this sort of thing is available to those who are younger, whereas when I was a teen I was on my own.  To all the younger gals out there:  you have an advantage, use it and have a great time :)

  16. I don't mean to be a big negative nelly here, but I've yet to see a size 4X on Modcloth's website ever.  I love Modcloth's clothes; they're very much my kind of kitschy vintage style, but the biggest size I've ever seen on their site was a 3X, and only 1 of those at that.  It also wouldn't have fit me, based on the garment measurements.  I've also experienced the same issue with Forever21 plus sizes.  I'm a size 22-24 on top, and can sometimes fit in a size 20 if generously cut, but I rarely find items that fit me well at Forever21.  They might fit a smaller size fat person, but not me.  Some of Forever21's more T-shirt-like plus size tops fit me, but I already have enough Ts in my wardrobe, so I was really hoping to be able to find something else.

Rachel Palley's clothes, while beautiful, are also WAY too spendy for me, and I'm an independent woman in her 40s with a career and a graduate degree.  I can't imagine how a 16 or 17 year old kid could afford them, unless their parents are wealthy and/or they have a sizeable allowance.

If I'm looking for something kind of unique to wear, I usually check out B and Lu.com or LucieLu.com.  Lucie Lu is the "Lu" from B and Lu, and both designers create and market interesting and fun knitwear for a fairly reasonable price.  They also have size 4X and 5X items, but not all garments in those sizes.  Their 4X and 5X items usually sell out pretty quickly, so I check their websites every month or two to see if they've added anything new.

I'd also recommend Maurices.com.  They have a pretty good selection of plus size items in more youthful styles.  Being from Southern California, I'd never heard of Maurice's until recently.  They're a smaller department store in the midwest and possibly on the east coast, similar to Mervyn's in California, but strictly for younger women.  Most of their clothes are reasonably priced and I've ordered some cute tops from their site in the past 2 years.

Kohls.com and JCPenney.com also have junior plus size selections on their website, although I don't usually see anything larger than a 3X in both sites' juniors collections.  Their "regular" (in other words, non-junior) plus sizes aren't terrible...most of the time.  Both Kohls and JCPenney plus have a lot of more, um, matronly/mature styles, but if you check out their sites every couple of months, you can sometimes find some more youthful items in their non-juniors plus size collections.  And they usually go up to a U.S. women's size 28.

Elloqui is a good suggestion, although I've returned everything I've ever ordered from their site.  I've found their clothes to be *very* cheaply made for the price.  I'm hoping with time, they start using better fabric and better garment construction.  I'd also like to see a little more unique detail in their garments, but I hope they stay in business and keep getting better.

Other suggestions: eshakti.com - a little bit pricey, and their plus sizes usually don't go larger than a U.S.women's size 20, but if you're willing to pay a little extra money, you can submit your measurements and get a garment custom designed to your size (although I've never paid to have it done, so I don't know how accurate they are at customizing to individual measurements).  Also alight.com - trendy, youthful styles from various plus size designers, usually up to a junior's size 3X, and occasionally 4X, 5X.  Similar to eloquii, most of what I find on alight.com is not that well made, but the price is usually reasonable.  Not always, but usually.

  22. On a personal note I’m just glad that these ‘fashion Dr Dre Beats headphones’ were designed with the influence of a woman. These aren’t some ridiculous pink over the top thing, but a concept design that took time to cultivate and bring to the masses and for that I thank you Monster Cable, Dr. Dre, and Lady Gaga. The combination of Lady Gaga's sense of fashion and music with the innovative sound and look of beats by dre cheap made it the right fit.
