Extra, Extra! Read All About It

When emerging designer Carrie Hammer reached out to me to be part of her Kickstarter Campaign, to help fund the launch of her bespoke clothing line catering to women of all sizes (with a standard 0-20 and even more customization options), she was tugging at a place very close to my heart - so of course, I obliged. My friends Alicia, Kim, Christina, and Jenni were also on board, so I knew I was in good company. With so few designers, especially young independent designers, making their wares available and accessible to a diverse group of bodies, I really get excited and enthusiastic about anyone who jumps on board the mission. I think it's so important that fashion holds a place for all kinds of bodies - not just the narrow scope of what is considered the ideal. So, of course, Carrie Hammer's mission to create clothes for a professional woman, regardless of her size, is something that resonates deeply with me. Continue...

  15. love your blog but I have to be honest - that skirt, though fabulous, makes you look much bigger and wider. I don't think it's well designed/suited for bigger girls. however, this is my opinion and before anyone bashes me for it - to each his/her own, I am simply being an honest observer. xo

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't think that the comment itself was awful, but it wasn't presented in the best way. I also saw the skirt and thought it made Nicolette "hippier," and then immediately thought, "Ugh. I wish I had the confidence to not care if a skirt made me look hippier and just wear the shit out of it." I get it, but I'm tsk-tsk-ing Joanna too.

  38. agreed - the truth is that most women aren't shaped like off-the-rack garments, and most people could do with a nip-and-tuck (of their fabric, not their bodies!) here and there. the MAJORITY of my clothing needs to be tailored or customized, to some extent!

  44. Hey Joanna, I appreciate the comment. I know it's not coming from a mal-intentioned place, but the truth is, I've moved far beyond the necessity to "flattery" my body with my clothing. I honestly find it pretty disturbing that women are always held to a standard of flattering their shape - whether they're a size 2 or 12 or 20. I think it stems from a culture that shames women for their bodies, and that is just not something I can get behind. Yes, this skirt does make me look bigger than I am, but so what? I think it's fun, poofy, has a sense of humor, and is a blast to twirl around in. I'm happy that I've gotten to a place with my own self-image where I'm less concerned with making myself look thinner, or "flattering" my body, than I am with having fun with my fashion.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I agree that there's definitely a bit of "you do you" in this. I think everyone is entitled to dressing however they want. If what [the universal] you wants is to "flatter," then - cool! I don't think that's always the point of fashion or style, and I love that so many people respect that personal choice. Hopefully this has been a bit of a teaching moment, to some extent.
