{STYLE} Pattern Play

Though I think I'm pretty open minded when it comes to dressing, I'm generally not a fan of patterns. I love a good stripe or polka dot, and I think leopard is a neutral - but beyond that, graphic shapes and prints aren't usually the pieces that steal my heart. Instead, I usually like playing with color, texture, and shape to create dynamic styling throughout my wardrobe. Continue...

That said, when I spotted this mismatched chevron print top at Lord&Taylor, I knew I had to have it, even though I had no idea how I'd wear it. On anyone else it would look amazing with a pair of tapered trousers, but I'm me - and I don't do pants. But you know who can work a pattern like no one I know? My mom! So I channeled the one woman in my life who always looks flawless, sophisticated, and put together. She makes even crazy all-over-butterfly-prints look effortless and chic, and while it's hardly the thing I admire most about her - there's no doubt that it has influenced my aesthetic, and each year I find myself emulating her more and more.

This post is part three of three in a series sponsored by Lord&Taylor and SheKnows.

  5. Nicolette, you have been slaying your outfits. This is my favorite so far for the month of October. I haven't seen this top yet but I will be headed to L&T on my lunch break to snatch it. Like you, I'm not much of a print person outside of stripes and leopard print. However, this summer I challenged myself to do more prints and I did loads of floral print and aztec prints. I am going to do the same thing for fall starting with this top.

  8. Hi Nicolette! I know you might not get to this, but I'm about to head to the states and want to stock up on liquid eyeliner while I'm there because it's so much cheaper than in Australia. Is the Stila an all day? I've been using Rimmel fine tip for the past...five? years and looking for something that leaves more of a clean line. I'm as expert as I can be, but interested to know what you think. Also that skirt is out of this world great.

  10. Well, guess I need to purchase ALL of those OCC glitters now. How dare you!

  11. Looks awesome! You definitely pull off the print really well. And I have to get my hands on that skirt. Though I'm notoriously clumsy when wearing white. I'd been eyeing that Kate Spade myself for awhile. So adorable. I love purses that are shaped like other things. I'm still kicking myself for not picking up the Kate Spade book clutch. And I've been coveting the Charlotte Olympia Croissant Clutch ever since I heard about it on "Girls" but I can't justify over $1500 on a confection-shaped accessory! Someday...

  12. OCC's Anime color in the lip tar is my most favorite bold lip. It's such a perfect pink and it stays put for the better part of the day! I believe it was you who turned me on to OCC when I read it on your blog - thank you!

  17. If you typically stray away from wild prints, then I feel like this top is a nice bridge between classic prints and funkier ones. I am too drawn to prints and end up with so many pieces that I can't mix and match. I'm trying to get better about this! Also, that radio bag is completely adorable! What a fun piece!

  39. When I'm looking for a bit of feminine jumpstart to a fashion block, I come here. I like that your style is definitely girly but not cloyingly sweet. I'd duplicate your outfit if I could, but the annoying humid weather that is around all year long will destroy me in that coat.
