{STYLE} Just Try it On

Photos by Lydia Hudgens

I have swooned, and swooned, and swooned over Clover Canyon ever since my friend Amy Keller introduced me to the Los Angeles-based line. I'm not the type to go gaga over prints, but there's something so intoxicating about the use of color and graphics and softly-structured neoprene that has had me obsessing over virtually everything made by the (more accessible) double-C's. Their NYFW presentations have been consistently full of surprise and splendor, and I'm excited to see what's in store for their fall collection at this season's presentation later this week.

Though I'm always preaching about the "JUST TRY IT ON" approach to fashion, I felt just a little intimidated by taking on this still-fairly-new line and its limited XS - L size run. Bless Amazon Prime + Shopbop's supremely amazing customer service, but suddenly last week I felt it was time to test out my admiration in real life. The moment the package arrived at my door, I slipped the skirt on and twirled around like a little girl who has just discovered the movement of her clothes for the first time. It's not meant to work, but when it does - it's oh, so sweet. Ah, L, sometimes you really surprise me. And -- that 5% spandex (or elastane, as it may be) is occasionally life-changing.

  11. I just stumbled upon your blog and I already heart you. I am part of a newbie queerly engaged couple and realized that just because my money is as green as Jeff and Beth's my love is still excluded by many retailers and professionals. I haven't been able to find Mrs. & Mrs. anything in my super preppy with an edge world. I mean why does chevron have to pick sides? I look forward to seeing what you come up with if your personal style is any indicator to your wedding awesomeness!

  16. Yay! I love this post. I've been tempted to start a blog just about straight-size finds for plus-size ladies, and how we really can shop anywhere with a keen eye and a little bravery to just TRY IT ON! At least half of my closet is from straight-size stores.

  17. Any % spandex is life-changing. Especially, when it comes to smaller sizes. I stay looking out for 'spandex' on a tag. Anywho, very pretty skirt. Yeah, I'm a Clover Canyon fan, too. HUGE lover of prints so they already won me over.

  22. You picked the perfect spot for these photos. The background plays off your outfit so well. Very fun! I'm not familiar with this line, so now I have to check them out! I haven't seen any neoprene pieces in-person yet, but I'm really eager to, especially after seeing Tommy Hilfiger's Spring 2014 runway video and pictures. I'm kind of fascinated by the fabric and want to see how it works on my body. I'm happy this skirt worked out for you. It gives hope to the rest of us plus-size ladies to try something on if we love something, even if the tag size discourages us.

  31. I am so obsessed with your bob and all the other ones Gabi rounded up recently -- do you have any tips for making it piece-y like yours? I have heavy, straight hair and I'm worried it wouldn't look nearly as awesome if I couldn't get the waves!

Congrats again on your engagement and upcoming wedding. While wedding planning, I found myself on Pinterest, A Practical wedding and A Bicycle Built For Two! Those were my go- to sites. I really liked A Bicycle Built For Two because they're all about the lesbian wedding and include plenty of inspirational pics and cute stories as well. You can search the real life wedding inspiration section and can even narrow it down from pants/pants, pants/dress and dress/dress weddings. It was nice to look at those pictures for inspiration. P.S. I feel you on your mini rant- When booking venues I had to ask right away if they were open to a lesbian wedding. Good thing both of the venues I loved were totally open to it:)

  40. Did you get your wedding TO DO planner yet? I noticed MayDesigns.com has wedding planners you can custom make. I ordered my budget & workout planner from them. I was also gifted a weekly planner. They're very helpful when you need to organize. I personally love the variety of custom made covers. :)
